This is a comprehensive primer for anyone interested in exploring Quaker practices, written by a knowledgable and experienced practitioner. It is clear and easy to follow, answering the questions people are most likely to have. The Quakers' website is also very helpful and the guide 'Advices and Queries' which is included as an appendix is now available online.

Over the past twenty years of Quaker attendance and membership, I've read some of the standard British introductory booklets, by authors like George Gorman ("Introducing Quakers", "The Amazing Fact of Quaker Workship"), Geoffrey Hubbard ("Quaker by Convincement"), Rufus Jones ("The Faith and Practice of the Quakers") and Harvey Gilman ("A Light that is Shining"). Each in turn has impressed me in a different way. They're all gently opinionated books that reflect on the experience of the author concerned. Well, in this respect Jim Pym is no different. "Listening to the Light" is an excellent introduction to, and explanation of, the Quaker mindset. The basic approach is to take a famous Quaker quotation and examine what it means. In this way the reader quickly becomes familiar with important Quaker concepts. As a bonus, he compares the Quaker approach to that of Buddhism. I found this book a helpful and compelling read - quite hard to put down once started.

Last year my curiosity let me to attend a Quaker meeting here in South West Scotland - I ventured in with an open mind to a warm welcome. Wanting to know and appreciate more I discovered Jim's book which, true to it's word gives a clear insight into Quaker Practice. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It closes with The Advices and Queries which are part of the core of the Quaker practice. I am grateful to you Jim for writing this book that has joined me on my Spiritual journey.
